The end of January, 2005

Will this rain ever stop?! I'm ready for some sun and some heat. The cold weather always seems depressing to me and I can never get warm enough. I'll be very happy to see the weather folks predicting highs in the 70s. It's been a month now since the tsunami and I see it's not making headlines anymore. There's been a terrible train wreck in LA, people killed in India, Oprah telling us about atrocities against women in the Congo, not to mention the Middle East. I just wonder what it's going to take to get people to realize the consequences of their actions. So much violence and for what purpose? I just finished another terrific book, Mountains Beyond Mountains. It's a biography by Tracy Kidder on Paul Farmer, a man who is working very hard towards eradicating TB in the world. This man spends every waking hour working towards this goal and it certainly shows that one person really can change the world. I wish Oprah would organize a worldwide army of mothers as I am certain she's the one who can get people's attention and money to make this earth the best it deserves to be.

Is everyone sick or just me?

I cannot believe how many people I know that are physically ill. I know it's the time of year and the weather has a lot to do with it and maybe the lack of flu shots is a factor, but we should probably consider wearing masks and gloves to keep ourselves healthy. Our society scoffs at masks and little kids point and laugh but I'm tired of this cold I have and the fact that it's managed to make the rounds of practically everyone I know!
